We are finally getting a cold front, but that's going to come at a cost. The Storm Prediction Center has also issued a Level 2/5 risk for Severe Weather in Central and Eastern NC for Friday. A warm and humid airmass and an approaching disturbance will combine to produce widespread storms, and some of these storms could be severe.
WHAT: An approaching cold front from the west will bring the chance of thunderstorms, in fact, The Storm Prediction Center has outlined most of Central/Eastern NC in a level 2/5 for severe weather. One key ingredient for severe weather is CAPE (convective available potential energy) this important for the development of severe weather. Models are showing 2000-2500 which is more than enough for severe storms to fire. Another important ingredient is shear, the shear levels will marginal at best, thus widespread tornadoes not expected at this point but an isolated tornado is certainly not out of the question manly over Eastern NC.
Above is the forecasted severe weather areas, based on the SPC outlook, the greatest chance to see severe weather will be in the yellow (Slight) area from Goldsboro to Fayetteville, Raleigh, Rocky Mount, and Greenville. These areas have the best chance to see damaging winds, an isolated tornado, and large hail. Elsewhere in the green, you have a chance to isolated damaging winds.
THREATS: The main mode of Severe Weather tomorrow will be damaging winds, however While winds through the lowest 3 km will remain modest, vertical shear through a deeper layer with winds up to 45-50 kt at 500 mb will support wind profiles at least marginally sufficient for mid-level updraft rotation thus an isolated Tornado is possible in some storms, but multicellular convection will probably be the dominant mode as storms consolidate into lines and clusters. Strong to damaging wind gusts should be the primary threat. The timing of these storms will be from mid-afternoon to the early overnight hours.
