Tracking the tropics: Potential Tropical Cyclone 4 could impact North Carolina next week as Debby

🌀NEW: The National Hurricane Center has officially designed Invest 97L as Potential Tropical Cyclone 4, a Potential Tropical Cyclone is something the NHC does when a system is about to form but does not have a closed center but is nearing landmasses. This allows for tropical products to be issued ahead of time; the system is forecasted to become Tropical Storm Debby soon. The first cone of uncertainty from the National Hurricane Center has the system impacting the North Carolina coast next week, there remains considerable uncertainty beyond 3-4 days with the forecast, but we could be looking at least a tropical storm impacting parts of North Carolina mid-week. Followers are reminded of the considerable uncertainty and should also prepare for a potential Hurricane too. A Tropical Storm Warning is now in effect for the southwest coast

of the Florida peninsula from East Cape Sable to Bonita Beach. A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for the Florida Keys south

of the Card Sound Bridge, including the Dry Tortugas, the southern coast of the Florida peninsula east of East Cape Sable to the Card Sound bridge, and for the west coast of the Florida peninsula north of Bonita Beach to Aripeka. The National Hurricane Center says. Interests elsewhere in Florida and along the southeast coast of the United States from Georgia to North Carolina should monitor the progress of this system.

👌The latest Tropical model plots for Invest 97L continue to show a track into the Gulf of Mexico and then a crossover into the Atlantic Ocean, potentially bringing impacts to the Carolinas next week. There is considerable uncertainty on the exact specifics of the forecast, as some models stall the system off our coast because the trough to the north doesn’t pull it off our coast. At a bare minimum, it could be a tropical storm, but we can’t completely rule out a hurricane. How close the system is to our coast will make all the difference; if it is 100 miles off the coast, it will have less impact. If it rides right along the coast, we will have more impact. At this point, the main impacts, if any, appear to be along the coast of North Carolina; the next 24-48 will be vital in figuring out the exact effects on NC. There is considerable uncertainty at this point, but the odds of at least indirect or direct impacts to the Carolinas are increasing for late Monday into midweek, according to the timing. I’ll continue to have more thoughts throughout the day, but right now, the Bottom Line is we could be impacted by a Tropical Storm or even a low-grade Hurricane next week, especially along the NC coast.

📌Here’s the official forecast cone and forecast strengths from the National Hurricane Center; they currently have it forecasted to be a 60MPH tropical storm near our coast on Wednesday; there is high uncertainty, and the NHC says users should monitor for changes. I’ll keep you updated over the next few days, likely always, no reason to panic, but along the coast start making preparations for potential impacts from a Tropical system next week. Lots can and will change, though over the coming days.
